Q&A: Best way for an ex ballet dancer, now overweight, to get back into dancing shape?

Question by Lady Gaga’s Secret: Best way for an ex ballet dancer, now overweight, to get back into dancing shape?
I would so love to get back into ballet. What is the best way to work on my technique, strength, and flexibility while still losing weight fast enough to join ballet again next year?

You will not improve your technique by not taking ballet class and waiting for next year. You should not be so self conscious and “bite the bullet” and take class now. That will also help keep you on track for losing weight as well. You should never put off things you want to do because you are not the “right weight”.

I think Mintchips is right, but you could try some pilates. It obviously wont help your dance technique. Only dance class will do that. It will help with flexibility and get you toned. Yoga is another option, but not quite as good.

Personally, I would start with weight training. I know that sounds like a crazy answer, but my thinking is this:

In your shoes, I would feel too self-conscious in ballet class and that might be enough to put me off for good – so that’s not an option. Pilates would be great for your turnout and core strength, but it won’t help you burn calories or lose weight.

Whereas weight training will build strength in your muscles fast. More muscle fibre means your body burns more calories all the time, which will speed up your weight loss. When you start to see results, you can add in Pilates and start doing ballet stretches.
